U.S. Common stocks with unusual trading volume
June 12, 2024 Market Close
This information changes each day, as the attention of the market shifts to today's story, meme, pump, dump, split or news stocks. We calculate this with each run for the prior day, and it gives a good sense where the market is suddenly interested or uninterested (and trading shares) when compared to the average trading volume for the past year.
Each stock has a 'typical' level of trading volume based on number of shares outstanding, investor interest, liquidity, momentum, availability of liquid stock options, news, speculative opinions, market capitalization, stock price changes, and so many more factors. Stocks have a natural level of volume in a period of time.
Every day, stocks do show a change in their trading behavior. Some stocks trade above typical volume, say 50% more or 2,000% more than average annual trading volume. Some stocks trade below their typical volume, seemingly forgotten.
This provides an opportunity to keep track of changes in perception and expectations in stocks. We cannot ingest all U.S. stock news every day, but we can use changes in volume to know where to look for material news.
Some traders we used to follow and 'run with' would make trades on news or story stocks to catch the move, while others would omit those stocks from their 'reversion to mean' models as they are anomalies.
We publish the percentage of annual trading data for the full list of stocks with each run.

There are many reasons why a stock's volume will change. Stock volume changes are like a rear-view mirror on stocks. You can go back in time for historical shifts to see whether this tends to be a bullish or bearish sign. Stocks with exceptionally large changes in trading volume can present a trading opportunity.
